2. General note

The app “Ventile” (“the app”) was designed so that it can generally be used without processing personal data. All practice features work completely offline; the app needs no user account, no registration and no internet connection. The only connection to the internet is the automatic check for app updates (section 8).

3. No collection of personal data by us

The app does not collect, store or transmit any personal data within the meaning of Art. 4(1) GDPR to the provider. In particular, we do not process:

  • name, address or other contact details
  • email addresses
  • phone numbers
  • device IDs or advertising IDs
  • location data
  • IP addresses (by the app itself)
  • analytics or tracking data
  • user behaviour, usage time or interaction patterns

The only exception is the technically necessary information sent to the update service during the update check (section 8).

4. Local storage on the device

To provide its features, the app stores the following data only locally on your device (using the operating system component AsyncStorage):

  • Selected instrument, notation and note naming
  • Enabled accidentals and other settings (e.g. theme, haptic feedback)
  • Practice statistics: correct and wrong answers, streaks, daily history of the last 90 days
  • High scores of the game modes “Time Attack” and “Hardcore”
  • Your own custom fingering variants
  • Practice profiles and daily goal
  • Your practice reminders (time, weekdays, label)
  • A flag recording whether the intro tutorial has been seen

This data never leaves your device. You can delete it at any time by uninstalling the app or clearing the app data in your device settings. Within the app you can also reset statistics and progress individually.

5. Permissions

The app needs no sensitive permissions such as camera, microphone, location, contacts or storage access outside its own app directory. Haptic feedback (vibration) uses a standard system feature that processes no personal data.

Only if you set up practice reminders does the app ask for permission to show notifications. The reminders are scheduled only locally on your device; no push service and no server are used.

6. Distribution via Google Play and the Apple App Store

The app is distributed through the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. When you download and install the app, data may be transferred to the respective store operator (e.g. user ID, email address, time of download, payment information, device identifier). We have no influence over this data collection, and it is not covered by this privacy policy.

Google Play: Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland. Google’s privacy policy

Apple App Store: Apple Distribution International Ltd., Hollyhill Industrial Estate, Hollyhill, Cork, Ireland. Apple’s privacy policy

7. No ads, no tracking, no analytics

The app contains no advertising and no tracking or analytics libraries (e.g. Google Analytics, Firebase Analytics, Facebook SDK). No cookies or comparable technologies are used.

8. Update check and transfer of data to third parties

So that bug fixes arrive even without a new download from the store, the app asks the update service “EAS Update” of 650 Industries, Inc. (Expo), Palo Alto, USA, over the internet at startup whether a new version of the app content is available, and downloads it if so. For technical reasons the following is transmitted: your device’s IP address, the operating system (iOS or Android), the installed app and update version, the update channel and a randomly generated installation ID that is used only for delivering updates.

No practice data, statistics, settings or other content from the app is transmitted. We do not use this information to identify anyone or to analyse your usage. Without an internet connection the check is skipped and the app keeps working as before.

Since Expo is based in the USA, this may involve a transfer to a third country. Expo is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework; the transfer is based on the European Commission’s adequacy decision (Art. 45 GDPR). Where necessary, Expo additionally uses standard contractual clauses (Art. 46(2)(c) GDPR). More information: Expo’s privacy policy

Beyond this, no data is transferred to third parties.

9. Legal basis

Settings and progress are stored only locally on the basis of your use of the app (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR, to provide the features offered), without this data leaving the device. The update check (section 8) is based on our legitimate interest in delivering bug fixes and security fixes promptly (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

10. Your rights

Since we do not store any personal data ourselves, we generally cannot provide you with information about data from the app; your rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, data portability and objection (Art. 15–21 GDPR) nevertheless apply. If you have questions, you can contact us at any time at the address above.

Independently of this, you have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR).

11. Changes to this privacy policy

This privacy policy is updated as needed, for example when the app’s features change or new legal requirements arise. The current version is available in the app and at the URL listed in the respective app store.

12. Contact for privacy questions
